THE CULTURE AND THE WAY OF BEING OF THE PARANAENSES
THE FOLKLORE THAT IS BORN FROM OUR ROOTS
The folklore of Paraná brings together customs brought by European immigrants, slaves who colonized the State, indigenous peoples who already lived in the territory, and migrants from Santa Catarina, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Northeast, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo. The strongest traditions came from the immigrant groups and the main manifestations are the Fandango, the Litoral, the Cavalhadas, from Guarapuava, and Congada, from Lapa. The Cavalhadas and Congadas happen on specific dates. The first in October and the second, on December 26, Saint Benedict's Day.
FANDANGO
Fandango is the liveliest activity, with dances on the coast. It is a popular ballet, typical of caiçaras and fishermen. The dancers wear clogs, which are beaten on the wooden floor with floorboards. Beats are from men and women do the choreography. The song comes from the ensemble of viola, rebeca and tambourine.
CONGADA
The Congada has scenic representation brought by the Jesuits. The demonstration was used to convert the pagan Africans. The descendants of slaves did the car on St. Benedict's Day.
CAVALHADAS
Already the Cavalhadas go back to the medieval tournaments. In them, the struggles between mouros and Christians are revived.
CELEBRATE IS ALSO IN OUR BLOOD
The immigrants who settled in Paraná brought the memories of customs, traditions and dances.
The celebrations became parties, which became popular. Traditional or religious, they move the local economy.
LIGHT PARTY
Catholics celebrate the Party of Light, which marks the day of the patroness of Curitiba, Our Lady of the Light of the Pines, on September 8. The program includes masses, blessings, live music, craft stalls, clothes, food and religious items. Our Lady of Light compose a myth about the foundation of the City. The story goes that there was an image of the saint in the chapel of the first village, Vilinha, on the banks of the Atuba River. Every day, this image was facing the countryside. Interpreting the will of the saint, the Tindiquera chieftain, of the Tingui Indians, buried a stick, the symbol of the command, in the place where it would be the central square of the future city. In the place, today Praça Tiradentes, the stick would have sprouted and turned tree. There the church was erected in honor of Our Lady of Light.
PARTY OF THE PATRONESS OF PARANÁ
The party of the patroness of Paraná, Nossa Senhora do Rocio, is one of the most traditional. Commemorated on November 15, religious programming has novenas, maritime and motorized processions and church mass. The image of the saint was found by a fisherman in Paranaguá.
THE PARANÁ IN THE FESTIVALS
FOLKLORIC FESTIVAL OF ETHNICS OF PARANÁ
The Paraná Folkloric Ethnic Festival brings together performances with music, singing and dancing on the stage of the Teatro Guaíra. The exhibits show the culture of the colonizing peoples of Paraná. In the first edition, in 1958, it had an amateur character, produced by the first immigrants and their children. And, since the 1980s, the festival is part of the official calendar of government events.
CURITIBA THEATER FESTIVAL
The Curitiba Theater Festival takes care of the city and gathers an average of 400 spectacles of companies from Brazil and abroad. The program offers, in addition to the plays, related activities, such as art fairs, workshops, exhibitions and book launches. During the festival, the traditional spaces of culture, streets, squares and bars become the stage for the Official Show, which brings unprecedented spectacles, and for the Fringe, a democratic space without curatorship, which opens up opportunities for Curitiba and other productions States.
MUSIC WORKSHOP OF CURITIBA
Every beginning of the year, renowned musicians and apprentices gather in public and private spaces for the Curitiba Music Workshop. In the program, more than 200 concerts of erudite music to popular and free concerts.
The exhibits are in parks, churches and cultural spaces. The program also includes other events, such as the Vinyl Fair, Green Workshop, Gastronomic Fair, cycling and motorcycle rides, Cinema Show, Culture Buses and Digital Paiol.
UFPR WINTER FESTIVAL
Antonina receives thousands of visitors at the Winter Festival of the Federal University of Paraná. In programming, workshops, performances, cultural presentations, book launch, gastronomic fair, seresta and out-of-season Carnival.
LONDRINA UNIVERSITY FESTIVAL
Shows of national and foreign companies are presented annually at the Londrina International Festival. The story begins in 1968, with the University Festival of Londrina, with competitions of poetry, theater, music and photography.
At that time, the State University of Londrina, UEL, still did not exist. Music and other arts have lost ground over time. In 1970, the festival became a theater only. And, 18 years later, it became international; in 1990, is renamed Filo.
CASCAVEL DANCE FESTIVAL
The Cascavel Dance Festival has been part of the cultural tradition of the West of Paraná for about 3 decades. In the program, there are presentations of dance academies with artistic exhibitions and competitive shows in various categories.
